How do I fix a failed subscription charge?

Check Your PayPal Account Status

Your subscription may have failed due to a general issue with your PayPal account status. Log in to your PayPal account to confirm that there are no active errors.

If an error message is presented to you after log in and / or PayPal has e-mailed you a message regarding an issue with your PayPal account; you should follow the instructions provided by PayPal to address the error.

Check Your Subscription Status

  • Log in to your PayPal account.
  • Click Profile at the top of the page.
  • Click My Preapproved Payments in the Financial Information column or click Money, then update in the My Preapproved Payments section.
  • Click the Merchant Name at the start of the row for the failed subscription.
  • Check Subscription Funding Source is set correctly and that no errors are presented. We recommend this value is set to a verified credit/debit card.
  • If you change your Subscription Funding Source, click Update Information at the bottom of the page.
  • If your subscription details and Subscription Funding Source appear to be correct, proceed with the following steps.

Check Your Subscription Funding Source Status

Subscription Funding Source = Credit/Debit Card
  • Log in to your PayPal account.
  • Click Profile at the top of the page.
  • Click Credit/Debit Cards in the Financial Information column or click Money, then update in the Debit and credit cards section.
  • Review your card details and confirm that ALL details are correct and current.
  • If any details are incorrect, click Edit for the card in question. Update ALL of your card details and click Save.
  • If the card number is outdated or the card is not labelled as verified or continues to cause failed payments, click Remove for the card in question, then re-add your card from scratch.
  • If PayPal provides instructions for verifying your card during the above process, carry out the instructions accordingly.
  • Return to your subscription details and review again, per the above instructions Check Your Subscription Status.
Subscription Funding Source = Direct Debit
  • Log in to your PayPal account.
  • Click Profile at the top of the page.
  • Click Bank Accounts in the Financial Information column or click Money, then update in the Bank accounts section.
  • Review your bank account details and confirm that the account is labelled confirmed and ALL details are correct and current.
  • If the account is not labelled confirmed or other messages are presented, follow the instructions provided by PayPal to confirm or correct your account.
  • Return to your subscription details and review again, per the above instructions Check Your Subscription Status.

If you continue to have difficulties after following the above steps, there may be an issue with your account. Please contact PayPal support so they can review your account set up directly.
